Sorbothane Test Results
Having recently purchased some of the World's most popular foam speaker isolation products & Sorbothane feet for my
studio I decided it was high time I checked their actual performance. To do this I recorded the vibrations/sound from
the underside of the wooden (MDF) studio desk directly beneath a monitor. I used the same short music clip which
includes a good dose of both mid frequencies and most importantly the problem bass frequencies. I tested a wide
range of both specific speaker isolation and general rubber, foam, wood, steel, aluminium & hybrid products. The
results are shown in the screenshot below:

Conclusions
1. Do not stand your speakers or monitors straight on a wooden surface (floor, desk, bench or shelf). If you do
then you are simply not listening to what is coming from your speakers - you are listening to a mess of
competing noises.
2. Foam rubber, regardless of thickness or manufacturer, is a very poor absorber of lower mid and bass
frequencies. We can't recommend using any foam product under your speakers or audio/HiFi component.
3. Rubber feet are good for avoiding vibration damage to your speakers and wooden surfaces but do not absorb
lower mid or bass frequencies and therefore will not improve the clarity of your sound.
4. Sorbothane is the proven and cost effective solution for this problem common to all studios and critical
listening environments.
5. Hard feet (steel spikes, stone or wood) will provide very limited if any reduction in vibration. Most of
these materials are actually excellent vibration transmitters. (for further in-depth analysis of this problem see this
excellent Recording Magazine article by Bruce Black who explains all of the
above brilliantly).
